Thanks to Champlain College
student Scott Thompson for this great poster and the
concept:
"This year do something selfish with your tax rebate.
Keep it in Vermont."
We love it Scott!
Many people are quite skeptical
about the Economic Stimulus Checks for
several good reasons:
-
They are an extremely short
term "solution" to a systemic, deep and complex
situation.
-
Our National Debt is already
over 9 TRILLION dollars (see source
the national debt clock)! We simply
can't afford to do this!
-
Encouraging more US
consumerism is simply NOT healthy for the our
citizens, the world or the planet.

And now, a message from
the President on the Economic Stimulus checks...
On the morning of
April 7th in a meeting at the White House with
small business owners, President Bush rejected a
second stimulus bill, instead wanting to
wait for the stimulus checks to "kick
in":
...And thirdly, I, you
know, I think we ought to, in terms of
pro-growth packages, I think we ought to, again
I repeat, give this one a chance to kick in. The
experts tell me that this pro-growth package is
going to add some - you know, a percent,
percent-and-a-half to the economy here in the
latter part of this year.

Like it or not, we are
getting Economic Stimulus Checks, so let's make the best of it for
the Green Mountain State and Keep It In Vermont!
If we do with our check what
"the man" wants us to do, we will go on-line and buy a new
computer or TV from a big box store headquartered on the
other side of the country. Whoosh...there goes the cash
right out of the state.
On the other hand, if we give our
windfall to our local farmers and they spend that money at a
local store who in turn pays a local employee who spends
some money on a nice dinner at a local restaurant whose chef
pays a local farmer for the food served in the restaurant we
will truly stimulate the local Vermont economy.
Then there are those of us who
really need the money to pay our bills, put food on the
table or to save for our kids' education. Believe it
or not, this NOT what the economic stimulus checks are
intended for. But don't take the bait! Take
advantage of this gift from Uncle Sam and put your own and
your family's welfare first.
Of course, there are lots of
other ways to keep the money in the state like shopping at
locally owned and operated stores, buying products made in
Vermont using Vermont-made ingredients and materials, or
donating a portion of your check to a local non-profit
organization that is doing good work for Vermont and its
citizens. And, that is what this website is all about
- getting all of us to think about how we can best use the
money we get to help our neighbors and stimulate the Vermont
economy.
